This month we'll be hearing from Paige Cromley, Regional Representative for Halter, the ag-tech company bringing virtual fencing to ranchers across the American West. Halter's solar-powered GPS smart collars use audio cues and gentle vibrations to guide and contain cattle within virtual boundaries that ranchers create and move from a smartphone app — no wire, no posts, no riding out to shift the herd. Halter's collars are now satellite-connected, meaning ranchers can manage cattle anywhere they can see the sky — no towers or on-ranch infrastructure required.
Closer to home, Halter collars are being put to work on the Rio Grande del Norte Virtual Fencing and Adaptive Management Project, a collaboration with BLM, Alianza Agricultura de Taos, Friends of Rio Grande del Norte, Working Lands Conservation, and local permittees exploring how virtual fencing can support adaptive grazing management on our public lands.
